Very few people actually seem to want to design a mud. Most just want to run one.

People start up new muds for a number of reasons. Very few actually succeed in creating a worthwhile game, however - which means they'll end up going back to other muds, often with a greater appreciation of the effort involved.

Besides, creating a mud doesn't mean you can't also enjoy playing someone else's mud.

Yeah, it just means you cant do it anywhere near as much!

In all seriousness, *everyone* wants a good, unique MUD they can set up in a day or two and have done with an active, well behaved playerbase. I too used to think like that, and met my first attempt at making a MUD with disaster once I realized I wasnt going to get anything special without a -lot- of effort put forth towards it... so I went back to playing MUDs.

Now, a couple of years later, Ive decided to stop playing video games (for the moment, entirely) and work on designing one. Ultimately my attempts to make and run a MUD were a good learning lesson, if a slightly embarassing one.

In other words, dont worry - Id be willing to bet 95% of people who try to make a MUD never do, and most of those have few (if any) code changes off of a stock MUD.

[Its easy to find a builder which can make areas (quality aside) but hard as hell to find coders who can make MUDs (again, quality aside!)]

I think one often overlooked motivation for downloading a Stock codebase is simply to get a better understanding of the game you are playing.

Over the years several of our more active players have downloaded Circle, mostly out of curiosity, just to fiddle with it, and check out why things work the way they do - and propably hoping to find a few bugs to abuse too.

As far as I know only two of them ever got a Mud running, and two others are now coding for us.
